KSVY Benefit Event: Twisted Songs & Sharp Satire at Sebastiani Theatre

Long before social media, long before memes, and long before anyone could fire off a hot takes hiding in comment sections, Tom Lehrer was already there at the piano with a raised eyebrow and that grin.

On Saturday, June 13, Sonoma audiences will have a chance to step into that world when the Totally Incorrect Players present An Evening of the Twisted Songs of Tom Lehrer at Sebastiani Theatre. The event also serves as a benefit supporting the historic Sebastiani Theatre, KSVY 91.3 FM, and KRCB 104.9 FM — helping sustain local arts, free speech radio, and independent community media here in Sonoma County.

For KSVY, this one feels particularly close to home.

Community radio has always had room for curiosity, experimentation, unexpected voices, and conversations that don't fit neatly into a box. Tom Lehrer occupied a similar space in music and culture. A mathematician by training and songwriter by inclination, Lehrer became known for intelligent and often mischievous songs that explored politics, science, institutions, social norms, and the strange corners of everyday life through satire and humor. His work became influential far beyond the relatively small number of recordings he released.

Some of his songs still feel surprisingly current. Others feel like time capsules from another era. Many somehow manage to be both at once.
